“alpona” painting by artist from Santiniketan, West Bengal.
This alpona
demonstrates an owl, the companion of Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth.
This style of owl painting is typical to the districts of Birbhum, Bardhaman
and Murshidabad of West Bengal. They are mostly used during the worship of the
Goddess in the Bengali month of Bhadra.
The motifs used
are lotus, the seat of the goddess, “dhanshis”, signifying good crop
cycle, “ghurniful”, used in worship, “lokkhi paa” or the
footsteps of the goddess and a “sankha” or conch shell.
