“alpona” painting by artist from Santiniketan, West Bengal.
The alpona
demonstates a “lokkhi pecha” or a Bengal snow owl, which is said to
be the companion of Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. It also
demonstrates other components of the Goddess’ worship like a ‘dhanshish’ and
‘ghurniphool’. The alpona is usually drawn above the doorways to welcome the
blessings of the Goddess into homes.
