Evey traditional Alpona artwork of Bengal has a story behind it. This handcrafted painting depicts ‘Joy Mangalchandi’s Ghot’, a sacred ritual vessel associated with the worship of ‘Mangal Chandi’, a revered folk goddess of Bengal, during the Bengali month of Jaishtha. The central vessel is surrounded by flowing ornamental motifs and framed by a ‘Kolachhora Lota’ border, a traditional vine-like pattern symbolising auspiciousness, prosperity and divine protection.
Hand-painted in traditional white on an earthy terracotta-toned background, the composition reflects the close connection between folk art, ritual, and everyday life in Bengal. A distinctive piece that brings together cultural symbolism, traditional motifs, and the expressive beauty of Bengal’s folk-art heritage.
