Evey traditional Alpona artwork of Bengal has a story behind it. Known as ‘Saptapadi’ or ‘Pan-Supari’ Alpona, this design is traditionally associated with weddings and the sacred ritual of the seven steps taken by the bride and groom around the holy fire. It is drawn at the ‘Tulsi Tola’, the sacred space dedicated to the Tulsi plant, reflecting the deep connection between Alpona, ritual, and everyday life in Bengal. Executed in classic white on a rich terracotta-toned background, the repeating forms and flowing patterns capture the simplicity and rhythmic beauty of Bengal’s folk art traditions.
