Evey traditional Alpona artwork of Bengal has a story behind it. Known as ‘Haate Po, Kakhe Po’, meaning “a child in the arm and a child in the lap,” the Alpona is traditionally created during Jamai Shashti, a Bengali festival celebrating the son-in-law and wishing for the prosperity and well-being of the family. It is believed that by drawing this motif, the family will be blessed with children.
Hand-painted in classic white on a warm terracotta-toned background, the composition reflects the simplicity, rhythm, and symbolism of rural folk art. Elegant and meaningful, this artwork brings a touch of Bengal’s artistic and cultural heritage to contemporary and traditional interiors alike.
