Dayal Karmakar, a dedicated artisan from Dariyapur in Bardhaman district has embarked on a mission to revive and promote Dhokra, following his family’s legacy. Originally from the region renowned for its rich cultural heritage, Dayal’s passion for this traditional craft is evident in every piece he creates.
Dhokra, an age old technique of lost – wax casting holds a significant place in India’s craft history. Despite having completed his education up to the 7th grade, Dayal has profound understanding of the cultural importance of Dhokra. He has taken it upon himself to spread awareness about this intricate art form. Through this effort, he hopes to encourage more people to appreciate and purchase handmade Dhokra items, thus ensuring the survival of this craft.
Dayal comes from a family with a history in Dhokra artistry. His father’s uncle, Haradhon Karmakar, is a celebrated figure in the field, having won a national award for his exceptional Dhokra crafting. Inspired by his family’s achievements and the heritage of his village, Dayal is determined to continue this tradition.
